Whether you are in a leadership role currently or an aspiring leader Social Life is something one should pay a very close attention to. Good Leadership requires a lot of attributes – another dedicated topic – but having a balanced Social life is definitely one of the top ones. I deliberately chose the headline picture which shows balancing Social Media vs Social Life. Though in the modern world, they could be closely related, those are two separate things.

In most Engineering Organizations, there are two types of main leadership roles, VP and CTO. Organizations have different names for it, SVP, Head of Engineering etc. The difference between them boils down to one needing exceptional People Management skills while the other exceptional Technical Chops.

What do I mean by a Social Life? A non virtual, good old, genuine social human relationships.

As a People Leader, having a good Social life – community involvement, social interests, having good group of friends and family, work life balance and having positive attitude towards life – these are all extremely important aspects. Amongst numerous other benefits, it keeps you honest, grounded and confident. So whether you are interviewing for People leadership roles or are already one or aspiring to be one, I highly encourage you to spend more time and energy on “Social Life”.
