Fear Of Missing Out the key point to note is FEAR. There are numerous articles on the web that discuss Fear Of Missing Out in great detail. Earlier on in my career I had read a lot of them. If I recall, one of the best ones was from Harvard Business Review articles where author had put out all the possible scenarios and actions corresponding to those scenarios. At the time, I found those as valuable readings but didn’t really help me with the “FEAR” aspect of it. After several years of wisdom and experience, sleepless nights, I have a much more simplified and boiled down version of solution.
It is all about handling the Fear.
Whether the situation has a some truth, a real reason for being forced to miss out (MO) or just a perception, it does not matter.
Conquer your Fear.
Best thing to do is “let it go, focus on your work, stay positive and let your work speak for itself”. This helps in both possible outcomes. Best case, you find your footings again. Worst case, even if there was some truth to it, what you gained was
- Less time spent worrying
- Investing in what matters the most which will be useful in your career later down the line and
- Look at it as a learning experience in your long and successful career. Learn from the situation so as to not repeat it again.
